Ranikhet emerged on the map of India in 1869 when the British established a cantonment here. British have left but Ranikhet is still a cantonment town which doubles up as a hill retreat for Indians. Along with the riches of nature, it also offers a peek into the colonial past. To add to the heritage appeal of the town, you have Windsor Lodge here.
Established in 1909, it used to be a hunting lodge which would host the British or the well-heeled Indians. Today it is a heritage hotel. The guest rooms, made up of timber, are embellished with antique furniture. They have indoor sporting facilities, and can also arrange several outdoor activities including golf.
